Sonnleithen

The vineyards of the elongated, terraced Sonnleithen vineyard face predominantly south, east, and southeast, with the rows mostly oriented east-west. The vineyard lies at an altitude of approximately 220 to 310 meters above sea level. The vines are planted in the western, upper part of the vineyard on weathered, crumbly deposits of the Hollenburg-Karlstetten Formation. These are conglomerates with sandstone, silt, and rare marl layers. The deposits of the Hollenburg-Karlstetten Formation consist primarily of calcareous, hardened carbonate pebbles, the conglomerate. These are approximately 15 million-year-old river and delta deposits from a river in the Limestone Alps, the so-called Ur-Traisen. Downslope in the eastern part of the vineyard, the conglomerate is covered by gray-yellow, floury loess. In addition to Grüner Veltliner, the Riesling grape variety particularly benefits from the combination of loess and conglomerate in the subsoil. It lends the wines a strong minerality and spice. The vineyard name Sonnleithen dates back to at least the 19th century (administrative map 1:28,800, 1864-1881) in this spelling.
